Scanning, Image Acquisition and Virtual Desktops

THE SOLUTION: “VIRTUALIZE” THE IMAGING HARDWARE One useful characteristic of a virtualized desktop environment is the protocol that connects everything together. Physical desktops and thin clients that connect to virtual desktops in the data center are tied together through well-understood protocols like Microsoft’s RDP or Citrix’s ICA/HDX. Far different than the varying— and often incompatible—protocol standards among imaging devices, RDP and ICA/HDX are the same everywhere. That pervasiveness makes these protocols a suitable bridge for an environment’s wide array of imaging devices. Combined with the right thirdparty software support, these protocols can turn any document scanner, card scanner, flatbed scanner or other imaging device into a network device right out of the box. Figure 2 shows a graphical representation of the universally accessible architecture that results. This architecture provides a practical solution for sharing imaging devices of all types across a healthcare network. With it, a single imaging device can be shared by users over the network in a manner that is little different than printer sharing. Further, as Figure 2 also shows, appropriate software support can allow shared imaging devices to scan directly into the workflow of EMR (and other) applications. Physical desktop BIG PROBLEM. ELEGANT SOLUTION. Call it “virtualizing the imaging hardware.” Or merely “scanner sharing.” Integrating an intelligent third-party solution into your virtual desktop environment needn’t be a complex task. In fact, the right solution is one that rides atop the protocols already in place to fulfill the performance, mobility and imaging requirements that today’s healthcare demands.
